ESOL/Family Literacy Teacher - Refugee Family Literacy Program

Refugee Family Literacy Program (Friends of Refugees) in Clarkston is seeking an ESOL/family literacy teacher to join our team. Refugee Family Literacy is a unique family literacy program that provides early childhood education to children ages 0-5 while their mothers study English onsite as well as daily Parent and Child Together (PACT) sessions.

This position coordinates with the Center for Pan-Asian Community Services, an organization which employs the teacher in partnership with Friends of Refugees.

The mission of this position is to teach English to refugee parents, help parents teach/support their children with language and literacy, and coach children and mothers in family literacy practices in an environment that fosters empowerment, communication, and community. In addition to classroom instruction, this job involves the building and support of a unique community at RFL and commitment to the family literacy model which brings in various curriculum elements to the adult classroom and PACT time. ESOL teachers plan classes for and teach both adults and children as part of this model in partnership with children’s teachers at the school.

Classes for this position meet on Tuesdays/Thursdays. Teachers typically arrive at school at 8:45 a.m. and leave at 12:45 p.m. In addition to teaching class on these days, teachers attend two staff meetings per month, conduct home visits in students’ homes with partner teachers, attend several trainings each semester (including some online training), and participate in the life of our community. Classes take place August - May.

Minimum Qualifications for teachers include ESOL certification and 3 positive references. 1-2 years teaching experience and experience working in a multicultural setting is preferred.
